Ngāpuhi leader Whina Cooper had led the march from Te Hāpua in the far north to protest against the continuing loss of Māori land. WebThe hikoi or land march united many Māori and supporters in the fight for Māori land. Protestors and police at Bastion Point Between 1977 and 1978 members of Ngati Whatua occupied land at Bastion Point, Orakei, for 506 days. The occupation ended in a dramatic eviction by the police.
